Calm is a superpower!
I’m sure you have all heard of adrenaline before. This hormone and neurotransmitter has metabolic impacts, influences nearly every tissue in our body and is important for regulating our heart rate, blood vessel and air passage diameters. You most likely know about its role in the fight-and-flight response, i. e. what you want to be able to do if a lion appeared in front of you.
Now getting a regular adrenaline rush is not a bad thing as you feel highly active. However, when you constantly experience situations that cause you to get into fight-or-flight mode (= chronic stress), your adrenaline levels will be elevated.
Consequently, what does that mean for your health? – Research has shown that due to chronic stress, adrenaline levels are permanently elevated. Most noteworthy, another side effect is the lowered levels of the tumour suppressor protein p53. This protein plays an important role in preventing abnormalities of the genome. In mice this effect was noticed in just 4 weeks!
If you often experience stressful situations act now before it becomes chronic and has a damaging impact on your health. Become aware of your stress triggers and work on minimizing/avoiding them. Find your place of calm, physical and cognitive, and make it a routine to ‘go’ there regularly!
